WORK vs WANT - Makes the Difference in Your Life
Total Reading Time: 5 minutes
I’m not sure if this is our last holiday issue or our first issue of the season. Guess it all depends on whether your school has started yet or not.
Either way, this issue looks at the difference between Work and Want and the role that each play in our lives - and the lives of our players. As well as giving you some Random bullpen workouts to help jumpstart your season.
I started this newsletter to share things I’ve learned from my curiosity and love of learning, and I want to share those things with other curious pitching coaches like you.
My passion is helping people and I hope this newsletter helps you!

If you’re new to this newsletter - subscribe now, I’d love to have you join us!

(If you’re from my generation you’re singing these words)
Blocked & Random Practice Downloads
Last week we dove into the role that both Blocked and Random play in the development of our pitchers, and I promised I’d share workouts with you this week.
Below is a list of Random workouts that will challenge your pitchers and help them practice the Randomness they face in games:

WORK vs WANT - Makes the Difference in Your Life
We’ve probably all come across players who don’t want to work very hard but who want all the things. Sound familiar…
It isn’t just players. I was talking with a head coaching friend of mine recently who was really struggling with why his assistant didn’t seem to work very hard.
I don’t think any generation is right or wrong, good or bad. I just think that the world around us changes so much, and that so greatly impacts us.
For instance, I grew up in a world without the internet (imagine). Where phones were attached to the wall by a cord, and where TV shows only came on once a week - and if you missed it you were out of luck.
We didn’t even know the meaning of the word “immediate”. We ordered things out of a catalog and they came a month later. We waited in line for hours to buy gas, and when we bought something we had to use cash - which most of us didn’t have much of. This world totally shaped my mind frame by teaching me I had to be patient and “work” for things I wanted.
Softball-wise, nobody went to lessons, we practiced with our teams instead, and our team was lucky to have 5, $35 bats that were all carried in our team “bat bag”.
Now, compare that to the world today. We can order anything from Amazon today and have it arrive tonight. We take our phones with us wherever we go, and “immediate” is everywhere.
Softball-wise, everybody goes to lessons and rarely practices with their team. And every player owns at least 2, $400+ bats they carry in their own personal bag.
This is the world our players are growing up in and it totally shapes their mind frames by teaching them that things can happen right away and all they need to do is “want” something and it shows up.
Whatever your background, “work” is the key to any achievement you want in life - the more you work the more likely you’ll accomplish what you’re working toward. Work and Achievement move in conjunction with each other:
On the flip side, the less you work, the more likely you won’t achieve much. It doesn’t mean that you have to work hard, but it does mean you won’t achieve much in life unless you do.
Players and younger coaches are teachable, so instead of judging people who don’t behave like we’d like them to, it’s our job to teach them. Help people who may not be working as hard as you’d like, see that it is possible for them to achieve their goals. The bigger the goals, the bigger the work.
Hope you enjoyed this Issue. If there’s something specific you want to read about send that to me at [email protected], or text me at (813) 368-2048
See You Next Week!
