How's Your Pitcher Doing with Her Data?

Total Reading Time: 3 minutes

This issue will explore where your pitchers need to be with their pitch movement data, and 5 reasons your players will have for talking. My passion is helping people and I hope this newsletter helps you!

How’s Your Pitcher Doing with Her Data?

We’ve all got data coming out of our ears. Getting data isn’t hard, knowing what data to pay attention to, and understanding what it means is the key.

Let’s look at some of the basic metrics for pitch movement: Spin Efficiency, Vertical Break, and Horizontal Break as they pertain to each pitch.

A couple things to remember when looking at these numbers:

  • Your pitchers shouldn’t expect to be “High” in all of their pitches

  • Pitchers shouldn’t expect to have all of these pitches, but instead, have a few of these pitches - be Average in most and shoot for High with their best pitch.

  • Use these numbers as a guide, and not as a firm scale to measure against.

Remember that these figures are guides to help your pitchers development, and not meant to be hard-and-fast numbers that must be obtained.

I’m Talking, Why Aren’t You Listening…

As most of you know I live with my 96 year old Mom, and while it’s something I’m grateful for, it has it’s challenges. Mom and I get along great and we both love to talk.

Recently we got a little sideways when Mom just wanted to talk and didn’t need me to do anything but listen. It took me a while to figure out that she didn’t need me to answer - she just wanted me to listen.

It made me realize we communicate for different reasons, whether its my Mom talking to me or your players stopping by to talk to you.

Our players will have different reasons for talking to us. Sometimes they want our help, while other times they just want to get stuff off their chests, so let’s check out the 5 Reasons We Have For Talking:

  1. Give Help - This is where we fall as coaches - we talk to give help. So do teachers and parents, and anybody trying to help out.

  2. Get Help - We’ll also talk when we need help, although probably not as often as we should.

  3. Give Information - Lots of people talk to give information, like doctors, nurses, firefighters, tv and radio shows, TikTockers. This is where My Mom fell - she didn’t need my to answer since she was giving me information (ha).

  4. Work Things Out - Sometimes we talk to ourself or to a group when we’re working stuff out.

  5. We Can’t Help Ourselves - I fall into this category, along with my Mom and one of my nieces - sometimes we talk just to talk. We can’t help ourselves. Life is like a radio show to use and we have to talk our way through it.
